3G Development in China October 19-25

- China Mobile recently announced that it has opened China's first PTN (Packet Transmission Network) equipment tender, the SinoCast Daily Business Beat News reported on October 21. The PTN solution, which is used mainly to resolve problems with 3G data packet throughput, will enable China Mobile to boost its 3G network data services. Seven companies, such as Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, ZTE, Huawei, and FiberHome, had participated in the tender. Further details regarding the tender, however, were not yet disclosed.

Meanwhile, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese flagship company, recently also revealed that it has completed a trial commercial PTN for China Mobile in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, the Chinabyte.com reported on October 23. Aside from Shanxi province, China Mobile's PTN tests were also conducted in Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, according again to the SinoCast Daily Business Beat News. At the same time, China Telecom reportedly has begun PTN tests as well, while China Unicom is projected to carry out PTN tests later without specifying a date though.

- China Mobile said its total mobile phone subscribers had reached over 500 million as of September 30, 2009, of which 1.66 million were subscribing to its TD-SCDMA services, according to the company's Customer data for September 2009 announced on October 20, 2009.
